Truth or Urban Legend?

February 20th, 2008 Posted in Stef Ann Holm Blog by Stef Ann

Does anyone know if it’s really true that Yoplait yogurt uses ground up beetles as a red coloring???!!!

  1. Bonnie Wurst says:

I wouldn’t know if Yoplait has red bugs in it because I WOULDN’T PUT YOGURT IN MY MOUTH…IT’S SOUR DAIRY PRODUCTS!! UGH

  2. KAREN WALKER-SAYA says:

I COULDN’T TELL YOU ABOUT YOUR YOGURT,BUT MY BLONDE NEIGHBOR SAY’S SHE’LL NEVER TOUCH OREOS BECAUSE THEY WERE MADE WITH DRIED WORMS.SHE’S A TEACHER OF FIFTH GRADE,THIS REALLY MAKES ME WONDER….I’D EAT THE YOGURT

  3. Mia says:

Yikes! I googled yoplait just so I could tell you it was all legend but found several articles saying it is true! I wish I hadn’t cause Yoplait is my favorite yogurt. :P

  4. Nancy says:

OK …. well think about it this way… Picture the first person to ever rip the raw flesh off a cow, then jam it in the fire (you’d think ohhhhhhh {{shudder}} what a horrendous smell that’d be) yet, who doesn’t LOVE the smell of a neighbor BBQ’ing steaks on a warm summer night?? It’s the end result that’s so good, don’t think of the ‘making’
OK so beetles and worms are smaller versions and usually give us the creeps…(They certainly DO give me the creeps) But end result – Oreo’s and Yoplait??? YUM!!!! It’s all natural…(gross, but natural…) HEY!!! That means Oreo’s are GOOD for us…(I can justify anything!)
But I do find it hard to believe that either yogurt OR Oreo’s are made with either of those products

I have never heard this before, but know I want to hurl. I just ate a yougart LOL

  6. Hannah says:

It’s true. The red color comes from ground up female cochineal beetles and their eggs. Yoplait isn’t the only one that uses them. According to this article, they “are also used to give red coloring to Hershey Good & Plenty candies, Tropicana grapefruit juice, and other common foods.”

The whole article is very informative.

  7. Stef Ann says:

Boy, I’m thoroughly grossed out . . . My husband told me to write Yoplait and ask them directly. I may do that as I can’t believe it.

  8. Hannah says:

I have some strawberry Yoplait so I looked at it and sure enough, one of the ingredients is carmine, which is the same thing as cochineal extract.
DH bought a case of Yoplait, half peach and half strawberry. I told him he could have all the strawberry ones for his very own! LOL
